Activities

The BNCGG acts as the link between the IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics) and Belgian scientists working in the field of Geodesy and Geophysics.

In parallel, the BNCGG tries also to encourage the participation of young scientists to the IUGG General Assemblies by attributing grants.

In parallel with the BNCGG there exists since 1955 an nonprofit association, based in Brussel and called "Belgian National Committee of Geodesy and Geophysics". It is charged to administrate the finances of the Committee.

BNCGG Conferences

The BNCGG organizes 2-4 times per year conferences by renowned Belgian or foreign scientists. These conferences are open to the public. All active, honorary and associate members are personally invited.

BNCGG General Assemblies

Once a year the BNCGG organizes, usually in January, a General Assembly, to which active and honorary members are invited. During this meeting, the BNCGG activities are discussed and planned.

IUGG and its Associations

Every four years the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) holds a General Assembly. Each National Committee of Geodesy and Geophysics (as BNCGG), acting as a non-governmental organization in its relation to the IUGG, is represented by one of its members at these meetings.

BNCGG designates the national correspondents who represent the eight Belgian scientific associations during the IUGG General Assemblies:

  • International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS);
  • International Association of Geodesy (IAG);
  • International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA);
  • International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS);
  • International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS);
  • International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO);
  • International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth Interior (IASPEI);
  • International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth Interior (IAVCEI).

During these assemblies, policies governing the Union are agreed on, research programmes requiring international participation are formulated and coordinated and plans are drawn for their execution. The scientific results of programmes in progress are discussed at the numerous Scientific Symposia, Commission and Working Group meetings and other gatherings of scientists that are held during these assemblies.

In addition, the eight IUGG Associations hold regular General Assemblies for which the BNCGG also designates a representative.
